Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Grant Program

The Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) currently administers grant programs authorized by the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) of 1994 and subsequent legislation.

OVW grants support eligible applicants' efforts to help communities address domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking, support victims and survivors, and hold offenders accountable.

The Fort Peck Tribal Prosecutor’s Office has established a Victim Services program with the 2026 grant award.

Through this grant, the Victim Services Program works to improve the tribal justice system’s response to violence against women and ensure that victims receive compassionate, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed support throughout the criminal justice process. The program focuses on connecting victims with advocacy, resources, information about their rights, and services that promote safety, healing, and long-term stability.

One of our main objectives is to improve the criminal justice response to domestic violence cases through collaboration and training among prosecutors, law enforcement, advocates, community partners, and tribal judicial staff. Over the next three years, the Victim Services Coordinator will hold four trainings for Tribal, City, Roosevelt County, and Valley County law enforcement officers, as well as tribal judicial staff. These trainings will focus on comprehensive, trauma-informed responses to domestic violence, including victim safety, understanding the effects of trauma, effective communication with victims, and strengthening the collective response to violence throughout the criminal justice system to improve outcomes for victims and their families.
